Marketing a Home Based Business
Marketing a home-based business is not similar to marketing
a large company. As you cannot match the financial resources of a large
company, you must seek out ways that are cheap as well as effective.
One of the most important aspects of running any profitable business
is growth, and a home-based business is no different. Marketing is the
best way to grow your business, especially if you are starting out with
a small or non-existent client base.
Marketing can be done in many different ways, but whichever way you
choose, it spreads the word about your business and brings potential
clients or customers to you. Some methods include websites, printed
matter such as sell sheets and brochures, newsletters and advertising.
For online marketing, there are affiliate programs and link exchanges
and banner ads. There are an unlimited variety of ways in which you
can market your business, and while the choosing of one over another
may seem overwhelming at first, but deciding what you want to accomplish
and then researching your options is the best way to start.
1) Set a Budget - One of the first mistakes many home-based
business owners make is that, when they initiate a marketing plan, they
have not predetermined a budget. If you're not careful, you'll discover
that all your profits are being sunk into your marketing efforts. So,
before you decide what method you're going to use to market your business,
first determine a budget, and then stick to it. Many business owners
use what is called 'The 10% rule'. This means that if you attempt to
initiate a marketing program that will potentially encourage $3000 in
sales for a month, you should only allot $300 a month for your marketing.
Setting such a guideline will curtail overspending on marketing. In
addition, do a reality check. If you currently earn $500 a week in sales,
don't assume that your marketing efforts will bring in unrealistically
inflated amount in sales and then use that number to set your budget.
Keep it simple and small at first and then increase when you see that
the method you've chosen is working.
2) Determine Your Target Audience - Before you decide
on a marketing method, you need to ask yourself whom you're trying to
attract to your business. For most business owners, mass marketing is
neither profitable nor cost effective. So ask yourself some basic questions
to determine your target audience.
- Who are my current clients?
- What does my service or product offer?
- Will individuals or businesses benefit more from my product?
- What does my competition do?
After you've answered those questions, you can narrow down who your
target audience will be. But you can still narrow down that list even
more by conducting simple surveys. You can do this by joining Internet
chat rooms, surveys from your website, emailed surveys or questionnaires
and of course, by using the telephone. Remember, however, never to spam
your email address list.
3) Decide Which Marketing Method Will Work Best For You
- Some marketing methods work better for some businesses than others,
so choose wisely. Take the time to research the different options available
to you and then decide. If you own an online business, for example,
you may do well to focus your marketing efforts online as well. Also
consider your audience. If you are marketing to businesses rather than
individuals, your method will be different than if you were marketing
to particular types of consumers. If the product you are offering would
appeal more to young adults than senior citizens, your methods will
also differ. If your product or service will appeal to all ages, you
may even have to utilize several different methods to attract different
age groups. Use caution and remember your budget. A television ad may
appeal to you, but it may also drain your budget. Taking out ad space
in your local telephone book may provide beneficial, but then, so might
print flyers. Before you initiate a large marketing campaign, test your
results before you plunk all of your money, time and effort into one
method.
Once you have followed these easy steps, you will be better prepared,
and educated, in the variety of marketing methods available to you.
Happy Marketing!
