Popular and Easy Ways to Start a Home-Based Business
There are many ways to start a home-based business. Described
here are some of the most popular and easy ways to get started.
By Andrew Shim
Unlike the past, the word security isn't associated with today's jobs.
After tasting success with our home catering business, I have been advocating
all of my friends and colleagues to escape the rate race and start their
own home business.
Although many got pretty close to losing their employment, they are
still hesitant to make a transition. Actually, the toughest part is
not in knowing how to start a home-based business but making that initial
effort to step out of your comfort zone and forgoing you dependence
on your primary source of income. For all those who have taken that
most difficult step, here are some ways to get started with your own
business from home:
The Freelancer
Freelancing is the popular choice of most at-home entrepreneur as it
offers you the option of getting started immediately with having to
sacrifice your present job or source of income. It can however get pretty
tough balancing your energies and time between your job, business and
family. Co-operation and support of your family is of utmost importance,
especially during the initial stages, when you may not be able to devote
time to your family.
The biggest advantage of freelancing career that you are free to decide
the amount of work you want to put into your business. Depending on
your existing career demands and your abilities, you can devote time
to your freelance business accordingly. As long as the sense of security
prevails in your current job, you can take your new business lightly.
But when you start seeing warning signs of a possible job cut, you can
start taking your business seriously and gradually phase it to full
time. Self-discipline and maintaining balance between your job, business
and family is very important or else its pretty easy to get sidetracked
and lose focus.
The Part-time Businessman
Unlike freelancing where you are free to schedule the time you devote
to your home-based business, running it part-time requires you to devote
specific hours towards its development, while continuing your primary
source of income. Such an arrangement can also mean cutting down the
time devoted towards your primary employment to accommodate the new
business thereby a decrease in income until your business picks up.
When we started our catering business from home, we both worked part-time.
I had a full-time employment and my wife taught at a kindergarten in
the mornings. We still continue that way but I have left my full-time
employment for my Internet business, which I work in the mornings. Depending
on our needs and demands of our businesses, we plan our work accordingly.
The Full-time Businessman
Full-time businesses are usually opted by those who have been laid
down or by those who are desperate for a career change. Such people
often fall prey to business opportunity scams that are rampant both
online and offline. Apply due diligence before investing your hard earned
money in such offers as the percentage of people who actually make any
money is very very less. You should put your money only when you have
been working on your business for some-time and you are pretty confident
of getting it back, if not sooner.
Having sufficient backup funds, to sustain you and your business for
a couple of years is often advisable. You must also set a deadline for
evaluating your business when you must be prepared to go back to your
previous employment, if things doesn't turn out as expected and failure
seems impending. Failure is a part of every business and you must accept
it gracefully.
The Online Entrepreneur
Starting an online business can be an exciting adventure as you can
work on it like a freelance, part-time or full-time business. However,
it isn't as easy as some ads and offers claim to it be. You must be
prepared to put in a great deal of effort and time for it to really
succeed. Here are some ways you can start an online business from home:
Selling physical products. Unless you have an existing offline business,
which you would like to expand, or you are a prime source of some hard
to find product(s), this type of business can be pretty difficult to
establish. Online store however dominates over the physical store in
the fact that anybody from any part of the world has the potential to
be your customer.
Selling electronic info-products. E-books (Electronic books), online
courses and software sell like hot cakes and if you have good knowledge
of a particular niche, you can easily create and sell info-products
related to it.
Online services. Unlike one-time sale made by selling e-books/online
courses, here you'll charge your customers monthly/yearly for any type
of services you render to them. This can be web hosting, online magazine
subscription, software, etc.
Sell other people's products. This is termed as affiliate marketing
and is one of the most popular models among online entrepreneurs. This
type of business involves signing up with a merchant and marketing its
products through your website or by placing ads. You don't have to stock
or ship products. Everything will be taken care of by the merchant.
For every sale made through you, you earn a percentage as commission,
which varies from merchant to merchant. Depending on your interests,
there are innumerable numbers of merchants you can choose from.
Selling advertising space on your website. This has been a favorite
source of revenue for most website creators. Depending on the level
of traffic the website receives, the advertising rates will increase
correspondingly.
It's always advisable to start a home-based business when you already
have a secure job and a stable income. This way, you can think more
clearly and efficiently. Getting laid or fear of impending job cuts
can hamper clear thinking and the decisions you take out of desperation
may not always be the wise one. Nobody is secure in today's work environment
and the sooner you have a backup plan in place, the better.
