Do What You Do Best and Money Will Follow

If you are bothered about which home-based business to start, trust your instincts and do what you do best and love; luck and success will follow.

by Andrew Shim

Couple of years back, my family was facing a tough situation. My company was cutting down on jobs and we had to find alternative source of income immediately. Going through our inventory, we had some skills that we could capitalize on. They were cooking, web designing and teaching. Starting a web designing business and giving coaching would take considerable amount of time to establish. We had to start something pretty fast and so we decided to set up a catering business from home. Except for the fact that my wife was a great cook, we had absolutely no knowledge about running a business from home.

Two years down the line and after having established a pretty decent client base, we can now safely call ourselves owners of a successful home business. Had we not followed our gut instincts and made this transition, we would have been in deep trouble. Honestly speaking, it wasn't a difficult phase after all for us as we did what we were best at. Everyday is a just another day where we cook for a big (and growing) family. Side by side, I also set up a few websites. They are already showing signs of success and couple of years from now, we can be sure of becoming financially free. When the going got tough, the very skills that we took for granted pulled us through.

Whether you are in desperate situation like us or looking for ways to supplement your existing income, prepare a list of all the things that you enjoy doing and are good at. Go back through your life and list all the skills you acquired. No matter how insignificant it may appear, don't leave out anything. You may be good at typing or gardening or simply making great sandwiches.

Now go through the list you prepared with your spouse or someone whom you trust and reach for inspiration. This is important because sharing your ideas with everyone can attract lot of discouragement and negativity, which you don't want at any cost. Think about ways you can make money with your skills. Most of the people who are successful with their businesses are ones who do what they enjoy doing most. Most people have a mindset that only hard work earns money. A work appears hard only when you don't enjoy doing it. What you enjoy doing may be hard work for someone else. We started a catering business as we enjoyed cooking. It may be something else for you, which you never might have considered as a talent to turn into business. Let your home business be an evolution of your best talent.

Maybe you are very good in baking cakes. Have you considered turning it into a business? Maybe your chicken sandwiches taste great. How about selling them? Or what about the brownies you prepare that your relatives and friends always ask for more? Or you may be exceptionally good in teaching kids. Have you considered home tutoring neighborhood kids? The chances are endless. You just have to identify that one talent which you are best at and capitalize on it.

Not all businesses can be good earners and luckily for us, our home catering business brings in a decent profit every month. However, I strongly feel that money should not be the only driving force for you to start a home-based business. What really matters is the faith in your talents and abilities. Success however lies in keeping yourself updated with latest developments in your field, building your character and strengths and persevering.

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." - Lao-tzu, The Way of Lao-tzu.

If you keep doing what you do, you'll keep getting what you get. If you are not happy with your present situation, you need to do something different. Of course I'm not suggesting you to leave your day job this instant and start a home-based business. That would be a very foolish thing to do. However, there are plenty of opportunities waiting for you to exploit. You just need the courage to step beyond your self-imposed boundaries, and luck will follow. You too like us can make money doing what you do best and love.
