Why People Buy Things - Part VIII

In this installment of "Why People Buy Things" we're going to cover reason number 3, which is to make their home or office a little more pleasant to be in. We're talking looks here. Let's face it, we don't like living or working in a place that looks like it was the victim of a nuclear attack. We like nice surroundings. Now, for those of you who are selling acne cures or web hosting, you might be thinking that there is no way you can capitalize on this market. Well, you're wrong. And we're going to show you just how you can make any product or service fit in with the "make your home or office look nicer" theme.

The first thing you have to understand is this. Almost everything that you're going to sell on the Internet, with the exception of lawn products, is going to be used either inside the home or inside an office. Software products can be used in either place. Here is where we come to the "extras" that you throw in with your product or service.

Let's for argument sake say that you're selling a software product that allows a person to design things such as an interior decorating program where they can come up with items to put in their home to make it look nicer. Now, while you're not actually selling the items, such as the tables, chairs, sofas, or whatever, but in your ad copy or on your web site, you can stress how this program can help you to visualize better than any other product how your home can look with the proper accessories and how much more beautiful it can be. Show them screen prints from your software program on your web site. Let them see how they can decorate their home. While you're not exactly putting the items in the room, you're giving them a perfect visual that will make them realize that their home WILL be more beautiful IF they buy YOUR program to help them decorate it.

Is it a bit of a stretch? Not really. Sometimes a visual can be so powerful in terms of making us think the product or service is something we need. How many times do we purchase a video game because the cover art is so cool? The game itself may look nothing like what's on that box cover, but if the cover catches our eye, we're very likely to give it a shot.

So what about if you are selling something like web hosting? Kind of hard to make that an attractive package is it. This is where you have to think way outside the box. Stress the benefits of your hosting package, particularly the up time. If people are convinced that they don't have to worry about their site being down when hosted by your company, this is going to make that drab office look just a little better. But if that doesn't do it, include a free ebook on decorating your home or office with a basic hosting package. You can probably find one of these for free or a nominal fee online. Maybe if you can find a brochure that sells office furniture at a discount. Or, maybe you can give away a free office chair with a year's hosting package.

Like I said, you just have to think a little outside the box and anything can be made to fit into the beautify home or office theme.

Sincerely,
