Why People Buy Things - Part VI

In this installment of "Why People Buy Things" we're going to go over reason number 5, which is for relaxation, which is not the same thing as entertainment though they are closely related since they are both enjoyable activities. Relaxation is just more passive than entertainment, which can be quite physical and exhausting especially if you're playing video games that require a lot of skill and dexterity.

After a long day at work, many people just want to have a hot meal and sit down on the couch and relax. They may do this by taking a nap or by reading the paper or a magazine. Crossword puzzles are a great way to relax. One of the new things is Sudoku, which is a very popular number game that has taken the world by storm. And there are plenty of other things that people like to do to relax. So, how do we take advantage of this when we're trying to make a sale?

Well, not all of us sell things that fall into the category of relaxation. However, if we are selling a product, especially a business oriented product, we can stress to our potential customers how getting your product can give them more time to relax by easing the burden of their work related activities. Maybe you have a software program that cranks out articles so that a person can have lots of content for their web site. You can stress how having this tool will save them hours of time in writing their own articles and thus give them more time to relax.

What if you're selling web design templates? This is also another one that's easy to fit into the relaxation angle. By telling people that by using your templates they don't have to spend as much time designing their web site. Just plug in the text and the links and they're done. This will give them more time to relax and enjoy their life instead of slaving over an HTML editor trying to figure out where the meta tags go.

Of course, if you happen to sell an item or a service that specializes in relaxation then you have it made. One of the biggest online sellers is vacations. Just go to any of those sites that book hotel rooms. I realize this is not an easy business to get into, but imagine if you did. You're basically selling relaxation. Not only in the fact that you're sending somebody on a vacation but you're taking all the work out of it by booking their room and their travel for them all in one convenient location. It doesn't get any better than this.

Basically what it comes down to is this. When somebody makes a purchase from you they want to feel that in some way the stress in their life will be relieved, at least somewhat. If you can manage to convey that in your ad copy and your site then you have a good chance of making the sale.

And that should relax you a great deal.

Sincerely,
