Why People Buy Things - Part III

In this third installment of "Why People Buy Things" we're going to go over reason number eight, which is emotional satisfaction.

A lot of people think that a person buys things because they need them. While that is true to some extent, as there are some things we do need to survive, the truth is, people really buy things more because they think those things will make their life better. Sure, we all need food to survive, but people just don't buy any food in the stores. They buy foods that they like. Unfortunately, this leads to a lot of people walking around on sugar highs or terribly overweight. But that's another matter. The point is, even though we need food to survive, we buy food that we enjoy or food that gives us that emotional satisfaction.

With that in mind, you have to look at the product or service you are promoting and think of it not so much in terms of what it does but what it can do to make a person's life better. How can it make that person happier? How can it make that person emotionally satisfied? Well, with some things, such as web hosting, that's kind of hard to do. Let's face it, web hosting is just a place for somebody to put their web site. It's basically a storage area. You can't see it. You can't feel it. You just use it and that's it. So what you have to do is attach something to YOUR web hosting service that makes it more than just web hosting. Maybe you can provide templates for people to use for their web sites. Let them see what these templates look like. Let them know that with a really great looking template that goes along with their hosting, they can get lots of people to their site because it looks so good. This is going to appeal to the customer's emotional nature.

What if you're selling an ebook? Well, one of the main things people love about ebooks are the ones that have sales pages showing these really fancy covers of how the ebook looks. Even though they know that they are going to download this book to their PC and will never really hold it in their hand, thus no real cover, the illusion of that cover, real or not, gives them an emotional attachment. The book becomes more tangible. Yes, it's psychological but like I said, people buy things for emotional satisfaction and it is very satisfying to see a cover, especially a very nice one, for an ebook.

There are many ways to appeal to a person's emotional needs. You can do it through visuals, through audios, such as having a sales page with music or a voice over. Let's be honest, glitz sells. And as many people in advertising say, you don't sell the steak, you sell the sizzle. A more true saying was never uttered.

If you keep these things in mind when promoting your product, you give yourself a much better chance of making the sale.
