...And It WORKS

I get a kick out of these ads and posts by people that ask others to give them the name of a program that WORKS, or people that claim that their program is better than everybody else's or this or that and then finish it up with, and it WORKS!

Well, let's put these misconceptions to rest once and for all because whether anybody wants to believe it or not, nothing either works or doesn't work all on its own.

The best way to illustrate this is with an example. Let's take an example of something that most people would agree DOES work.

A man goes to IBM and applies for a job as a computer repairman. He shows them his A1 certification and his past credentials and they're more than convinced that he'd be perfect for the job, so they hire him and send him to his work area.

The very first day this very talented repairman, gets his first assignment. A computer comes in with a dead hard drive. The information on it is still intact but the drive won't start up. No problem. All the repairman has to do is restore the data onto some other media, replace the hard drive with a new one and then put the data back on the new hard drive. Sure, the programs will have to be reinstalled but the main data has been saved and with it the customer's hard work is salvaged.

So there we are. The repairman has is assignment, a sure easy job, and one he can probably knock off in two hours, tops. All he has to do is get started and methodically go through the steps. They're all laid out. It's a simple matter of step 1, step 2, step 3, etc. There is no way, with his expertise, that he can screw this up.

So what does he do?

He takes a look at his watch, grabs his coat and heads to the corner bar for a drink. He spends the rest of the day there until 5 PM and then goes home.

He does this same thing everyday for a week.

Finally, his supervisor comes in to check on the PC and he finds that it's still not repaired. He asks the repairman why the job isn't done yet. The repairman then gives the supervisor his excuse.

Well, it wasn't as easy as it was supposed to be. I just can't get it fixed. He offers this explanation, thinking that it will be enough to get him off the hook. But what happens is his supervisor says, "Well, if you can't fix a simple thing like this, then we have no use for you here." And he fires the guy.

Here we had a SURE FIRE JOB, one that, with the proper skill, could EASILY be done. But it wasn't.

Why?

Because the guy simply didn't do it. The PC wasn't going to fix itself. A certain amount of effort was required to get that PC fixed. The repairman didn't put in that effort, therefor the PC wasn't fixed and as a result the repairman lost his job. A real PAYING job.

The kind of thing we think of as a SURE THING...or

Something that WORKS.

Nothing WORKS or DOESN'T work.

It's what WE do with it.
